Lowe’s Scholarship Fund Continues to Build Careers

At last month’s International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Lowe’s Home Improvement brought Home Builders Institute (HBI) Job Corps students to the center stage of its exhibit floor to recognize the achievements of Job Corps and receive a $50,000 check for the continued funding of the HBI/Lowe’s Building Careers Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship was established in April 2004 with an initial $50,000 contribution by Lowe’s to help HBI Job Corps graduates defray the cost of making a successful transition into jobs in the home building industry.

Sandy Dunn, NAHB first vice president and HBI’s oversight officer, shared her gratitude to Lowe’s during the presentation. “I am ecstatic that HBI’s partnership with Lowe’s has grown to assist more than 130 young people in need,” she said.

Upon completing the Job Corps curriculum, graduates are often faced with difficult financial decisions on their future employment. The costs of housing, transportation, tools and more all must be absorbed by students immediately upon entering the workplace, requiring financial resources that they often do not have.

To date, Lowe’s has contributed $200,000 to the scholarship fund.

“Lowe’s believed in this scholarship from the beginning and we are very pleased to continue our support,” said Mike Horn, Lowe’s vice president for commercial sales. “HBI and Job Corps do a great job promoting the building industry as a career path for young people and that is something Lowe’s fully supports.”

HBI, the workforce development arm of NAHB, is the largest national training contractor in Job Corps, placing more than 2,000 young people annually in jobs in residential construction. NAHB members work through their local home builders associations to help develop the curriculum, mentor students and provide internships or work-based learning opportunities.

For more information on the HBI/Lowe’s Building Careers Scholarship or to hire an HBI Job Corps graduate, e-mail Keith Albright or Maria McIntyre at HBI, or call them at 800-795-7955, x8911 and x8912, respectively.
