Builders Honored for Community Service
Recognizing the exceptional philanthropic endeavors, community service and charitable projects provided by the housing industry, the National Housing Endowment honored eight builders with its first Builder Achievement Award for Outstanding Community Service during the International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Fla. on Jan. 11.
"Our members are active, committed citizens in their local communities, and often times their charitable involvement goes unmentioned," said Gary Garczynski, chairman of the National Housing Endowment, the philanthropic arm of NAHB. "With this new award, we are able to shine a positive light on builders bettering their communities, while at the same time providing a source of inspiration for others and delivering a positive message about our industry."
Among the winners of the award:
- Desert View Homes, of El Paso, Texas, received the Gold Award, with a $10,000 donation directed to the charity of its choice. Through non-profit organizations, the builder created two approaches to providing service, one focusing on addressing the community’s educational and economic needs and the second devoted to specific social issues.
- Bethesda, Md.'s Winchester Homes received the Silver Award, along with a $5,000 donation, in recognition of its “25 Acts of Charity Program” to celebrate its 25th anniversary. More than 55 employees and 100 subcontractors and suppliers participated in the program by donating their time and labor in support of 25 selected charitable activities.
- Lexington Homes, located in New Port Richey, Fla., received $2,500 for the Bronze Award. Last year, the builder united 450 organizations from six states to complete 10 community service projects. The volunteer work spanned four counties and totaled more than $1 million.
In addition, five builders received Honorable Mention awards of $1,000 for their favorite charities: C.P. Berry, Topsfield, Mass.; Focus Property Group, Las Vegas; Lee Wetherington Companies, Sarasota, Fla.; KB Home, San Antonio Division, San Antonio; and McGuinn Construction Management, Lexington, S.C.
Entrants were reviewed by a panel of builders and industry professionals and evaluated based on service need, member participation, community impact, creativity and history of charitable giving.
Builders, remodelers and developers entered the competition, including high-production and small-volume companies.
