20 Clubs: Share What You Know, Gain What You Need

Psst. The NAHB 20 Club program is a highly successful business networking and learning opportunity because the members of the individual clubs ― builders, remodelers and other housing professionals — share and compare everything they know.

They examine each other’s financial information, look for trouble spots and offer each other advice on how to increase their profit ratios and improve their performance.

They can nose around each other's businesses without worrying about putting any best-kept trade secrets in jeopardy because each club member works in a non-competing market ― and because each has signed a confidentiality agreement.

Essentially, club members act as a personal board of directors for each other and have frank and open discussions that they’d never have with industry professionals who work down the street from them. Through the exchanges, they teach each other how to work smarter, more effectively and more efficiently.

And what makes all this information sharing even more valuable is the fact that the information shared is extremely relevant. Club members in each individual club all have similar operations and a similar volume range so all the discussions compare apples to apples.

Builder 20 Club member Tim Roth, of J.T. Roth Construction, Inc. in Portland, Ore., found his 20 Club “to be the best tool for improving the operations of my company. And I can recommend the 20 Clubs to anyone that wants to show positive growth within their company."

Each club meets two times a year, usually at one of the member’s headquarters. But the information sharing isn’t limited to meetings alone. Members e-mail, call, fax and otherwise share their knowledge with, or glean valuable insight from, fellow club members throughout the year.

For more information, or to join a 20 Club, e-mail Jeff Lambert, NAHB, call him at 800-368-5242 x8609, or log on to www.nahb.org/20clubs.
