Sheathing Outperforms OSB in Non-Structural Walls
Foam board sheathing from Pactiv Corporation is an economic alternative to oriented strand board in non-structural wall applications that the manufacturer says provides four times the R-value and other benefits.
Headquartered in Atlanta, Pactiv Corporation is a member of the National Council of the Housing Industry — the Supplier 100 of NAHB.
Unlike non-insulating wood sheathing products such as OSB, GreenGuard® PLYGOOD® – Ultra increases the thermal resistance of the wall systems, adding to their energy efficiency, according to Pactiv.
The product has an insulation R-value of 2.0 in 7/16-inch sheets and 1.5 in sheets that are 3/8-inch thick. When used in conjunction with 7/16-inch OSB corner bracing, Pactiv says its sheathing matches the standard OSB thickness for an even wall surface on which to install siding or stucco.
Featuring closed-cell construction and strong polyolefin facers, the sheathing is highly moisture resistant. Consisting of an extruded polystyrene foam core and reinforcing woven facer, GreenGard® PLYGOOD®-Ultra won’t swell or warp and can be stored safely outside on the job site, Pactiv says.
Available in 4x8-foot and 4x9-foot sizes, the sheets weight less than five pounds and can be easily cut with a utility knife.
The product is engineered with a special laminated surface that allows it to be installed with pneumatic staples or roofing nails and to withstand winds up to 120 mph without blowing off the wall.
