NAHB-Produced Shows on HGTV & DIY — This Week

Systems-Built Homes Are New Stars on DIY

Systems-built homes are the stars on the DIY Network's new NAHB-produced TV series, "Assembly Required."

Forget yesteryear’s boxy homes on wheels or those flimsy mail-order modules. Today, prefab, or more accurately and appropriately, systems-built homes, are the sizzling alternative for home owners nationwide.

And what better way to showcase this growing phenomenon than through a new television series produced by the NAHB Production Group and airing on the DIY Network, part of the Scripps family of networks and including HGTV.

The Smith family (center) built their dome home themselves using little more than a wrench.

“Assembly Required” is a story-driven, half-hour that takes an inside look at system-built homes from the perspective of both home owners and builders. In fact, the owners, builders and homes are the stars ― there is no host — because “Assembly Required” digs right into the systems-built process to take viewers from design and blueprint into the factory, to the shop kit, then onto the build site. They even get to see the finished home.

Al Cobb, of PanelWrights LLC, explains how it's done during the NAHB production of "Assembly Required."

And what a variety. From modular, to a traditional mortise and tenon timber frame kit, to Michelle Kaufmann’s modern modular Glidehouse, “Assembly Required” covers a wide range of systems-built homes. Viewers will discover systems-built variations that are not only affordable, but fast, structurally sound, custom-designed and eco-friendly, too. In one episode, Andra and Gary Smith and their family build their own geodesic dome home.

This innovative series not only highlights the perks of this building technique, but also provides viewers insight into the challenges home owners and builders may encounter along the way.

The NAHB Production Group is currently in production on this 26-part series. “Assembly Required” will premiere on Sunday, July 3, on the Do-It-Yourself Network. To find out when it airs in your area, check your local listings or visit www.diynetwork.com.

The NAHB Production Group is a full-service, self-contained, media production unit creating programming for cable television, broadcast television, non-profit, museum and corporate clients. Productions range from magazine format shows for general audiences to museum-installation videos for specialized use.

The production group includes award winning journalists, writers and photographers with experience in broadcast, documentary and corporate television.
