Guide Available as EPA Cracks Down on Storm Water
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has made enforcement of federal storm water permits a top priority and is stepping up inspections across the nation, NAHB members are being advised.
In just the last 30 days, NAHB has received reports from builders in the Mid-Atlantic region who have been visited by EPA inspectors looking to evaluate on-the-ground compliance.
A new resource will help builders and developers navigate the maze of storm water compliance requirements.
“Managing Your Environmental Responsibilities: A Planning Guide for Construction and Development” was recently published by the EPA’s Office of Compliance, with assistance from NAHB and other associations affected by federal environmental regulations.
Included in the publication are checklists, self audits and detailed case studies on storm water and other environmental issues geared to helping builders understand which regulations apply during various phases of the construction project.
For example, the guide can be used at the pre-bid phase to estimate the compliance costs of applicable environmental requirements. And a responsibility-assignment checklist in the guide can help builders dole out environmental responsibilities to contractors and subcontractors before breaking ground.
In the hard-copy version of the guide, each of the checklists and chapters can be removed for easy use in the field. Copies will be available at the Advocacy Booth at NAHB’s Fall Board of Directors Meeting in Reno; or call the National Service Center for Environmental Publications at 800-490-9198 and specify document number EPA305-B-04-003.
