Composite Decking Resists Mold and Mildew

In a recent laboratory test at a leading university against nine other brands, LP WeatherBest composite decking showed significantly less mold growth than its competitors after eight weeks of exposure.

LP and WeatherBest are trademarks of the Louisiana Pacific Corporation, which is headquartered in Nashville, Tenn. and is a member of the National Council of the Housing Industry — the Supplier 100 of NAHB.

The high-density polyethylene composite used to make WeatherBest decking is infused with zinc borate to protect it against fungal decay and inhibit the growth of mold and mildew, according to the manufacturer.

The product also tests well in resisting fading, warping and splintering, says the company. It stands up to harsh weather, can be installed easily with standard woodworking tools and is available in boards up to 20 feet long.

Mold and mildew can grow on any deck surface, says LP, and it recommends following these common-sense rules for the product’s care and maintenance:

  • Deal with stains quickly and don’t allow them to penetrate the surface of the deck or bake under direct sun.
  • Grease will stain the surface, so keep a splatter guard under your barbecue grill.
  • Ensuring that the boards are sufficiently gapped or spaced will help prevent water from pooling on the surface of the deck and staining it.
  • The expansion gaps between the boards should be cleaned out with a flat tool to ensure proper drainage.
  • Wash down the deck periodically with a hose, even if it appears to be clean. This will prevent the buildup of pollen and airborne pollutants that can promote the growth of mildew and mold.
  • Use a common deck cleaner for normal cleaning.
  • To clean stains from mold and mildew, use a deck cleaner containing sodium hypochlorite.
  • A special cleaner containing phosphoric acid is recommended for removing rust stains or ground-in dirt.
  • A common household degreasing agent will remove grease or oil stains.

The distinctive wood grain of LP WeatherBest provides the authentic look of real wood and is available in four colors.
