California Builders Donate $10,000 to Tsunami Shelter Fund
The California Building Industry Association (CBIA) has donated $10,000 to the Home Builders Care/National Housing Endowment-Tsunami Shelter Fund to help rebuild homes in South Asia, where a deadly tsunami left more than 280,000 dead and 1.2 million people homeless in December.
The funds were donated from the association’s foundation, the Building Industry Institute, whose mission is to develop, implement and administer research and educational programs for home builders, developers and the general public.
CBIA Chief Executive Officer Robert Rivinius said that that association has used funds from the foundation to help out when disasters have struck not only in California, but in other states as well, such as when wild fires ravaged New Mexico in 2000. “We help out folks around the country where we can,” said Rivinius.
NAHB has designated Habitat for Humanity® International and Shelter for Life International to be the recipients of money raised for the Tsunami Shelter Fund, $354,000 to date. Through NAHB donations, Habitat for Humanity will create a Disaster Response Technical Center in one of the affected countries it is serving. Shelter For Life will build a “Home Builders Care Village” of starter homes.
