Deadline for Housing Quality Award Application Nears

Pulte, KB Home Divisions Earn Quality Certification

The NAHB Research Center announced earlier this month that the Nevada Area of Pulte Homes and KB Home San Antonio have earned certification under the center’s National Housing Quality (NHQ) program.

Formally launched at the International Builders’ Show in January, the certification recognizes builders who have implemented formal quality assurance systems and have participated in a rigorous audit by quality experts from the Research Center. Candidates for certification must work effectively with their trade contractors and are required to continuously improve all elements of the company’s quality assurance efforts to reach higher levels of customer satisfaction.

The program is designed to foster consistency and quality in building practices.

KB Home San Antonio was the fifth builder in the nation and the first in Texas to earn the certification. The division’s president, Craig Westmoreland, called the certification “a milestone in our continuous effort to build homes right the first time and meet our customers’ expectations.”

KB Home has been a pioneer in quality assurance in the home building industry. In November of 2003, KB Home Chairman and CEO Bruce Karatz announced that the company would become the first large builder in the country to implement the NHQ Certified Trade Contractor program nationwide. As a result of that commitment, all of the builder’s more than 80 trades in San Antonio have completed quality assurance management training, and 10 have been certified to date.

“It is our belief that customer satisfaction begins when the slab is poured,” said Sheryl Palmer, Nevada Area president of Pulte Homes, which is based in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. “We’ve worked diligently to implement quality control systems throughout the entire home building process. Every Las Vegas area employee and trade partner embraces these systems and the National Housing Quality certification further validates this practice.”

The Nevada Area of Pulte Homes, which also builds under the Del Webb brand, is a member of the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association, which serves as an administrator of the Research Center’s Housing Quality Certified Trade Contractor. Forty trade contractors in the Las Vegas area have achieved the certification since the program was started there in 2002.
