NAHB’s Newest TV Production, ‘Rock Solid’ Debuts on DIY

Cousins and co-hosts Dean Marsico (l) and Derek Stearns of DIY's 'Rock Solid'

Building a stone fire pit for your backyard. Turning a concrete floor into a marble-looking masterpiece. Replacing a fireplace surround with granite. Accenting an interior wall with cultured stone.  Building an outdoor waterfall. Making and working with adobe bricks.

These are just some of the do-it-yourself projects that will be featured in the latest NAHB-produced television series, “Rock Solid,” premiering at 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 6, on the DIY network. "Rock Solid" also airs Thursdays at noon and Sundays at 9:00 a.m. All show listings are EST.

Hosted by stone craftsmen Dean Marsico and Derek Stearns, two cousins from the Boston area who learned their trade from Stearns’ father, Arthur Stearns, a master mason, each episode will take viewers from start to finish on one home project.

During the debut episode, “Granite Fireplace Revamp,” Marsico and Stearns help home owner Frank Marinelli fix a common fireplace mistake he made when building his Newport, R.I. home 20 years ago. At that time, he covered the two fireplace surrounds in his living room with brick and inexpensive tile. He has since painted the surrounds, the paint is now faded and the tile is chipped.

To fix the problem, the two hosts revamp the surrounds using polished granite and boulder veneer. They also take a look inside a stone fabricator's shop and discuss what to look for in a good manufacturer and how to choose stone.
