NHE Grantees Receive Common Ground Award

In recognition of their achievements in conflict resolution, community building and peacemaking, Gary Garczynski, chairman of the National Housing Endowment (NHE) and NAHB’s president in 2002, recently presented the 2005 Common Ground Award for Bipartisan Cooperation to former HUD secretaries Henry Cisneros and Jack Kemp.

Kemp and Cisneros were honored in the March 17 ceremony for their collaboration on the creation of a bipartisan national housing agenda.

Along with Kent Colton and Nicolas Retsinas of the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University, the two housing leaders published “Opportunity and Progress: A Bipartisan Platform for National Housing Policy.” Released during last year’s elections, the book called upon the President and Congress to set aside partisan differences to pursue housing policies for the nation. The report outlined 12 recommendations to preserve, expand or reform existing government programs.

The book was made possible by a donation from the National Housing Endowment.

“Jack and Henry’s contribution will be felt for years to come as we diligently work to provide homes for the next generation of Americans,” said Garczynski. “The National Housing Endowment is proud to play a part in their efforts.”
