Drawing for Lansing-Area Home Raises $573,000 for St. Jude Hospital

Participating in this year’s Dream Home giveaway in Lansing, MI, Mayberry Homes raised more than $573,000 for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which is renowned for its pioneering work in finding a cure for cancer and other catastrophic diseases and saving the children who are afflicted by them.

The company built a 2,500-square-foot traditional home in its Hawk Nest community with the help of various subcontractors, who donated materials and labor, and media outlets and the city of East Lansing.

Boasting nine-foot ceilings, a wrap-around porch and a gourmet kitchen, the four-bedroom home was valued at $260,000, but one lucky contestant won the home for the $100 it cost to enter the drawing in which it was raffled off.

“The Mayberry Homes philosophy is centered on the idea of creating real communities, rather than just homes,” said Karen Shapiro, Mayberry’s director of sales and marketing, who helped break ground on the project along with the company's president, Robert Schroeder. “We believe that means giving back to our area.”

In recognition of their fund-raising efforts, the American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities and St. Jude Hospital in August presented Mayberry and its partners with the “Volunteer Group of the Year” award during a special ceremony at its headquarters in Memphis, TN.

“Being honored by St. Jude’s was a thrill,” said Shapiro. “But the real pay-off was when we saw how much we could help those children. We saw that we made a real difference, and there’s simply no greater feeling.”
