Member Input Needed on HUD Projects

The NAHB Task Force on Enhancing HUD’s Role in Housing needs to hear from association members who have used Office of Housing and Urban Development programs — including, but not limited to, FHA-insured loans for single-family and multifamily, Community Development Block Grants and HOME — to develop for-sale or rental housing.

The task force is particularly interested in finding out about innovative or demonstration projects and projects that may have combined financing from multiple programs and/or agencies. In short, the task force wants to know what worked and what didn’t work.

The task force would also like for you to share constructive suggestions regarding changes that should be made to HUD’s program requirements to help ensure the success of future projects.

When describing the project, please outline the number and mix of units in the project, the configuration (townhouse, detached, low-rise, etc.), the target market demographic and any age restrictions. Explain how the project was financed and include other useful information, such as the range of rents and what kind of assistance, if any, was available for tenants.

If the project consisted of for-sale housing, provide the size and selling price range of the units, the type of financing used by unit purchasers (FHA, VA or conventional), presale requirements and when marketing began and ended.

Feel free to include any other details that would help to describe this project and what could have been done to improve HUD’s involvement in the project, or what aspects of HUD’s involvement you found beneficial.

As soon as possible, send information regarding your experiences with HUD programs and suggestions for improvements, along with your contact information, to Bill Renner, NAHB’s director of single-family finance, by e-mail at wrenner@nahb.com, by fax at 202-266-8333 or by mail to: NAHB, 1201 15th Street, Washington, DC 20005.

Call Bill Renner with your questions at 800-368-5242 x8597.

In addition, the task force welcomes member participation and input at its next meeting, which will be held during NAHB’s spring board on Friday, April 30, from 8:30-10:00 a.m. in the Washington IV room (North Exhibit Hall) of the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel.
