Builders' Show a Busy Time for NAHB Student Chapters

It was an exciting time for the NAHB Student Chapters at last month's International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.

The festivities for the Student Chapters began on Saturday, Jan. 17, as Residential Construction Competitions for two-year, secondary and four-year schools, which was sponsored by Centex Homes, got underway.

KB Home provided a hospitality room with refreshments, easy chairs and a big-screen TV showing movies and NFL playoff-games in support of the event.

The Bloomington Area Vocational Center in Bloomington, IL, and Juneau-Douglas High School in Juneau, AK, won first and second prizes, respectively, in the Secondary School category. In the Two-Year category, Penn College of Williamsport, PA, won first place, with Brigham Young University-Idaho of Rexburg, finishing in second.

Winning first place in the Four Year School category was Michigan State University, wresting the crown from three-year champion and second place finisher Brigham Young University. California Polytechnic State University came in third.

Competition winners were recognized during a standing-room only awards ceremony on Sunday attended by more than 1,500 students and their supporters. The winners were announced by Bill Faulk and Steve Nellis from Centex Homes.

The ceremonies opened with a presentation of the Distinguished Service Award by Jim Sattler, the Home Builders Institute's (HBI) 2004 chairman of the board, to Steve Nellis, an HBI trustee and vice president of recruiting for Centex Homes.

Connie Edwards, corporate co-chair of the National Council of the Housing Industry — The Supplier 100 of NAHB, presented three NCHI Outstanding Student Chapter Awards. The first-place winner, Southeast Community College in Milford, NE, received a $2,000 check. Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center in New Stanton, PA, placed second; and Brigham Young University-Idaho won third place.

Alison Weintraub, acquisitions editor at Thomson/Delmar Learning, which joined the NAHB Student Chapters’ roster of corporate partners last year with its sponsorship of the awards for Outstanding Educators, presented the award for the Two Year/Secondary School category to NAHB Student Chapter Advisory Board Chair Jim Gronski of York County School of Technology. Rick Druckenmiller of Penn College was honored in the Four-Year School category.

Also presented were 30 Outstanding Student Awards from BuilderBooks.com. Bruno Pasquanelli of the Lee Evans Scholarship Committee announced the winners of the National Housing Endowment’s Lee Evans Scholarships for 2004-2005. Schools with chapters of more than 100 members and Silver Club schools that have participated in the competitions for 10 years were recognized as 100 Plus Club members.

The ceremonies were followed by a reception sponsored by Pulte Homes.

On Monday, some 600 student members participated in the Building Careers Job Fair, seeking their first job in the industry from the country's top home building companies.
