NAHB Provides Ammunition Against No-Growth Proposal

Last January, when the Palm Beach County Commissioners proposed banning all new construction of affordable multifamily and single-family housing in its jurisdiction, Danny Martell, the director of government affairs for the Gold Coast Builders Association, knew he had to respond on behalf of his membership.

“We called the national NAHB office,” said Martell. “We got a videotape and research from Multifamily about the benefits of multifamily housing. We got great information from the Land Development department. And Greg Brown, in Multifamily’s Housing Credit Group, gave us terrific material, including a book — “Producing Affordable Housing: Partnerships for Profit” — by the NAHB Economics Group that was full of exactly the information we needed.”

“We used all that to plan and put on a workshop for the commissioners,” he said. “We basically told them, ‘You can’t do this. We all need affordable housing. Here’s why.’”

The conversation on the misguided proposal is ongoing, and legal challenges to it also are in the works.

But even though the initiative isn’t quite dead yet, NAHB helped local builders respond quickly, with the best informational ammunition in the industry.
