Cutting-Edge Green Building Products Named the Top-10 for 2003

A sensor-activated faucet in which a tiny hydropower turbine keeps the sensor batteries charged, a “smart” vapor retarder that becomes more permeable as the relative humidity rises and a line of laboratory casework made from straw-based particleboard are among this year’s top 10 green building products chosen by the editor of the GreenSpec® Product Directory and Environmental Building News™.

The selections represent what the editors decide are the most exciting products that have been added to the GreenSpec Directory over the year.

“Some are used primarily in commercial buildings, others in residential applications," said Alex Wilson, co-editor of GreenSpec. “Some are considered green because they are made from recycled content or bio-based materials, others because they save water or are highly durable.”

Following are the top 10 products:

  • EnvironOxide pigment from Hoover Color Corporation in cooperation with Iron Oxide Recovery, Inc. The pigment is recovered from abandoned mine drainage and used to add nontoxic, nonbleeding and weather-resistant earth colors to concrete, cement block, paint, wood stain and brick.
  • BioBase 501 soy-based foam insulation from BioBased Systems, Inc.
  • MemBrain “smart” vapor retarder made by CertainTeed parent company Saint Gobain.
  • American Pride latex paint produced by Southern Diversified Products (601-264-0442) in cooperation with the University of Southern Mississippi. The paint, based on castor oil, contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and has no smell, so it can be used to paint the interiors of buildings that are occupied.
  • Mineral silicate paints made by Keim Mineral Systems. Approriate for stucco, plaster, concrete, brick, other mineral surfaces and some metals, the paints do not form surface films that can flake off; they soak into and permanently bond with the substrate; and they provide tremendous life expectancy that has been reported in excess of 100 years.
  • EnviroGT wall and corner guards made by InPro Corporation. This non-PVC product is made entirely from post-industrial recycled high-density polyethylene and, where wood is used, certified ash.
  • Laboratory casework from Case Systems, Inc. The company — the largest U.S. manufacturer of high-pressure-laminate casework for laboratories in schools and scientific and healthcare facilities — this year switched over from wood-fiber to straw-based particleboard. This has provided improved moisture resistance and does not off-gas formaldehyde.
  • Mirra office chair from Herman Miller, Inc. The ergonomic chair is built with a minimum number of components and 96% of its content is designed for recycling.
  • Hot Water D’MAND system from Taco, Inc. This is an electronically activated water-pumping system that quickly delivers hot water to a fixture, while returning water that has been sitting in the hot water pipes back to the hot water tank. Hot water is usually delivered within 15 seconds.
  • EcoPower faucets from TOTO USA, Inc.
