Builder 20 Club Helps Oklahoma Builders Grow...Big Time

When Jalal and Mohammad Farzaneh joined the Builder 20 Club in 1995, they had been in the business for over 10 years and were building between 30 and 35 homes a year in the Norman, OK area. They had dreams of becoming bigger. They wanted to grow their company, Home Creations, to become a 500-home a year company, and they wanted to achieve their goal in five years. They saw NAHB's 20 Club program as the way to do it.

The 20 Club program enables builders or remodelors from non-competing markets to share ideas and learn from each other ways to improve their operations and increase their bottom lines. The clubs meet several times a year, and at the meetings, members share and compare financial information, look for trouble spots and offer each other advice on how to increase their profit ratios and improve their performance. The Farzenehs joined their Builder 20 club to glean pointers from builders across the country about how to grow their business.

What the Farzanehs' fellow club members told them initially was that their own growth plans were a recipe for disaster, and that they should scale back their dreams to better complement their market and resources. Through the years, club members continued to share valuable business ideas, and the brothers' company continued to grow and gain market penetration.

Now, eight years later, Home Creations is one of the two largest home builders in Oklahoma. It will build an estimated 450 homes in 14 communities within five cities throughout the greater Oklahoma City area this year. The company has a staff of 50, more than 250 available lots to build on, 300 acres of land for development and another 200 acres under contract. Additionally, the company has 300 homes in different phases of construction — from building permit to occupancy permit.

Home Creations is also ranked the 19th fastest growing company in metro Oklahoma City.

Says Jalel Farzaneh, "Builder 20 is not the best way to run your business; it is the only way. You use other builders’ experience that had the same problem and found a better solution than we came up with. Why reinvent the wheel?"
