Low-Maintenance Steel Home in Simi Valley Fights Bacteria

A new steel concept home completed earlier this month on a Simi Valley hillside northwest of Los Angeles fights germs while demonstrating the advantages of steel in residential construction.

The home features antimicrobial-coated steel from AK Coatings, a subsidiary of AK Steel, in appliances, ductwork, air handling equipment and architectural hardware.

The 11,000-square-foot home contains about 200,000 pounds of steel, including 35,000 pounds coated with the anti-germ compound, AgION™, which is incorporated into an epoxy- or polyester-based pigmented paint system that can be applied to steel coils in a range of materials and products.

  • The home’s stainless steel roof and galvanized steel framing — provided by ATAS International Inc. and CEMCO, respectively — make the home resistant to earthquakes and fire and easy to maintain.
  • The ductwork, air handling unit and other equipment in the home’s heating and ventilation system — provided by Carrier Corporation, Lindab Inc. and Titus — are made of antimicrobial-coated steel to inhibit microbe growth and keep the components cleaner.
  • Most of the products in the kitchen — including dishwashers, a range and a microwave by DACOR; a convection oven and holding cabinet by Cres Cor; an ice machine from ICE-O-Matic that inhibits bacteria and slime fungus growth; and a refrigerator from Marvel Scientific — all use the antimicrobial-coated steel to reduce microbes in their favorite room in the home.
  • The antimicrobial compound has been used on the home’s door hardware, which has been furnished by SARGENT and McKinney Products Company.
