Remodelors® Council Is Leading the Way

With remodeling becoming an increasingly vital segment of the nation’s housing industry, the NAHB Remodelors® Council is stepping up its efforts to inform leaders and members of the association as well as the public of the importance of the industry.

As of 2001, remodeling activity in the U.S. weighed in at $214 billion, greater than both commercial and public works construction, clothing store sales and legal services, according to a recent publication from the council, “Leading the Way – The Remodeling Industry Impact.”

Across the country, more than 62,000 companies with payrolls are involved in remodeling, renovation, insurance repair and restoration, according to the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies. The Remodelors® Council represents 14,000 of those businesses, leaving at least 48,000 membership prospects for NAHB in remodeling, the publication says.

There also is a considerable overlap between residential remodeling and new home construction, the council says, despite some significant differences in the nature of the two activities.

The NAHB Remodelors® Council has established itself as the voice of the nation’s remodelers, and it has taken a four-pronged approach to leading the industry forward:

  • Advocacy. The council has worked with federal agencies to coordinate and recommend safe work practices on lead paint, asbestos and other consumer concerns. In the areas of community service, a representative from the council serves on the advisory board of Rebuilding Together, a volunteer organization that rehabs the homes of low-income families.
  • Education. A comprehensive educational program for remodelers includes the Certified Graduate Remodelor (CGR) and Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation programs.
  • Research. As the leading authority in housing industry research, NAHB conducts a wide range of remodeling-related research, including economic forecasting and the Remodeling Market Index (RMI).
  • Information and Public Relations. The council engages in an extensive program of media and public relations and marketing to bring remodeling to the forefront of member and public awareness.

The council is also providing new opportunities for smaller remodeling contractors to interface with manufacturers, the publication says, and it has helped to increase the participation of remodeling-focused suppliers at the International Builders' Show.
