Job Corps Students Join NAHB Student Chapter

Students enrolled in Home Builders Institute (HBI) training programs on a Job Corps campus for the first time have the opportunity to become members of NAHB.

Through a sponsorship program by the Home Builders Association of Western Massachusetts, students at the Westover Job Corps Center in Chicopee, MA, can now strengthen their ties to the nation’s housing industry through full membership benefits in the association.

The Westover Job Corps Center Student Chapter was chartered during the fall meeting of the NAHB Board of Directors last month in Boston.

The Home Builders Institute hopes to gradually expand the program to the more than 2,000 Job Corps students enrolled in its programs at 66 centers around the country.

Steve Nellis, an HBI trustee and member of the NAHB Student Chapter Advisory Board, said that it is important to bring Job Corps trainees into the association’s membership so that they can receive “first-hand exposure to the building industry as a complement to their training.”

The Westover Job Corps students will be joining with fellow members of their local home builders association on Oct. 25, “Make a Difference Day,” when they will be reaching out to offer assistance to those in need in their community.

In another positive development for the NAHB Student Chapters, the board of trustees of the National Council of the Housing Industry — the Supplier 100 of NAHB — has voted to make its sponsorship of the Outstanding NAHB Student Chapter Award an ongoing effort.

The sponsorship, which began last January, has enabled the program to increase the size of the prizes that are awarded annually to the nation’s top three chapters.

The 2004 awards will be presented at the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas on Monday, Jan. 19, at 7:00 p.m. at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel.
