Builders Working to Step Up Participation on State Financing Boards

A working group created by NAHB last year is pursuing ways to increase builder representation on the boards of state housing finance agencies (HFA) and to provide association members with information on key issues relating to the programs of these agencies.

The agencies are becoming an increasingly important force in developing and administering affordable multifamily and single-family housing programs.

Home builders are able to help guide these efforts by serving on the boards of directors of their state HFAs. While some states have laws requiring builder representation on their HFA boards, others do not.

NAHB’s State Housing Finance Agency Directors Working Group has developed model legislation to increase the home building industry’s representation on state HFA boards of directors.

The legislation, which NAHB members can view here, requires at least one state board member to be a builder appointed by the governor from a list submitted by the state’s home builders association.

The NAHB working group is also:

  • Facilitating communication and coordination among NAHB members who currently serve on HFA boards
  • Developing and maintaining resources to support the participation of NAHB members on HFA boards
  • Developing policy on issues related to the HFAs
