Foam Insulation Enhances Energy Efficiency

The Icynene Insulation System — a soft foam insulation that expands to 100 times its initial volume to completely seal building envelopes and stop air leakage — can help builders capitalize on the growing market for sustainable, energy-efficient and environmentally sound construction products, according to Icynene, Inc., the product’s manufacturer.

Headquartered in Misissauga, Ontario in Canada, Icynene, Inc. is a member of the National Council of the Housing Industry — the Supplier 100 of NAHB.

Icynene says that its product controls air infiltration, enabling builders to improve HVAC management and sizing for optimal energy efficiency and delivering energy cost savings of up to 50% for home owners.

Icynene is 100% water-blown and contains no CFCs, HCFCs, HFAs, HFCs, formaldehyde or volatile organic chemicals, according to its manufacturer.

“As a complete air barrier, it minimizes the intrusion of outdoor pollen, allergens and pollution from entering the home,” says Icynene. “Its air barrier characteristics also help prevent the movement of airborne moisture across the building envelope that can lead to condensation, mold and mildew.”

The product also has acoustic properties, says Icynene, that can reduce noise levels between rooms and control noise from home theaters, media rooms and playrooms. It also helps control the penetration of sound from the outside.
