Associations Score Success in Distributing Educational CD-ROM

The distribution of Building Homes of Our Own, NAHB’s award-winning, interactive educational program for middle-school students, continues to widen across the country, according to home builders associations.

The Wichita Area Builders Association recently reported that the program is being distributed across the Wichita School District, the largest in the state, and it has the potential for reaching 50,000 students in the area.

Wes Gaylon, the Wichita builders’ executive vice president, said that his association’s educational committee is planning to introduce Homes of Our Own in surrounding counties, including Derby and Goddard, if the program proves to be a success in Wichita.

“When we met with the director of curriculum for the school district, he was excited about Building Homes of Our Own,” said Gaylon, “even suggesting that we introduce the program to educators at a teacher in-service day this fall.”

Reports from other associations are equally encouraging. Here is some of the latest information on where the game is being used to educate students about the home building process:

• In Wisconsin, the Madison Area Builders Association has started a campaign to distribute the CD-ROM program to 180 technology and consumer education teachers at local high schools.
• HBAs and Women’s Councils have presented Building Homes of Our Own to teachers, school superintendents and association members in Kentucky, Michigan, Oklahoma and Rhode Island.
• Working with the California Building Industry Association, the California Women’s Council recently presented the program to 25 educators and school administrators as part of their legislative day activities in Sacramento, the state capital. The presentation was a success, according to National Women’s Council Chairman Lee Terry and California Women’s Council President Sheri Mitcheltree. The Home Builders Institute's Build a Home, Build a Career was also featured at the meeting.
• The Pennsylvania BA; Stillwater, OK, HBA; HBA of Greater Kansas City; HBA of Metro Portland, OR; HBA of Greater Dallas; and NAHB member Richport Properties of Tucker, GA, have designed programs to deploy the program in area schools.
