While Sumter County, FL, ranks first with a recent-mover active adult share of more than 60%, Collier County, FL, is the largest market on the list. Of its more than 30,000 active adult home owners, 51.4% purchased their homes recently.
The top 10 counties are:
- Sumter County, FL, where 61.6% of 9,718 home owners ages 55-74 bought their homes since 1995
- Nye County, NV — 57.6% of 4,763 older home owners
- Archuleta County, CO — 53.5% of 1,104 home owners
- Washington County, UT — 52.3% of 7,684 home owners
- Collier County, FL — 51.4% of 34,361 home owners
- Summit County, CO — 49.5% of 1,011 home owners
- Pinal County, AZ — 49.3% of 18,947 home owners
- Beaufort County, SC — 49.2% of 12,840 home owners
- Yavapai County, AZ — 49.0% of 21,525 home owners
- Flagler County, FL — 48.4% of 8,677 home owners
The 2000 Census indicated that there were nearly 21 million active adult home owners ages 55-74 in the country.
California alone had nearly two million, and four other states — Florida, Texas, New York and Pennsylvania — had at least one million each.
