Green Home Building Moving Into Mainstream

Cutting-edge green building technologies are working their way into mainstream residential construction, according to participants at The National Green Building Conference, which was held in Baltimore on March 30-April 1.

“In the past five years, green building has become less a trend and more a full-blown movement for the housing industry,” NAHB President Kent Conine told the conference.

He indicated that the trend is especially evident in the materials that are being used in today’s homes.

For example, according to data compiled by the NAHB Research Center, from 1978 to 1999, the use of low-E coated windows in homes grew by almost 30%, and the use of insulated glass increased from nearly 68% to 87%.

Between 1990 and 2001, nearly 19,000 homes were built to local green building guidelines. But last year, more than 13,000 green homes were built, increasing the total number of green homes in the country by 70%.

This year’s conference was the first to be held on the East Coast.

Sponsors of the 5th annual National Green Building Conference were the Partnership for Advancing Technology for Housing (PATH), Fannie Mae, Lennox Industries, the Maryland Energy Administration and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the National Housing Endowment, the National Renewable Energy Lab, the Steel Framing Alliance, the Vinyl Institute, Whirlpool Corporation and Builder magazine.

The conference is headed for Austin in 2004.
