Obituary: Southwest Building Industry Leader Mark Tomlinson

Mark Tomlinson, a leader in the Southwest’s building industry for more than two decades, died March 23 at a Las Vegas hospital. He was 56.

Tomlinson had been hospitalized since the evening of March 10 following a choking incident at a restaurant in the Las Vegas area.

A home builder since 1975, Tomlinson was the immediate past president of the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association. He was also executive vice president with Pacific Properties & Development LLC, a prominent Las Vegas-based real estate development company, where he had been responsible for more than $250 million in construction projects.

Tomlinson also served on the Executive Committee of the Coalition for Fairness in Construction — a consortium of local organizations working to end the community’s construction litigation epidemic and restore liability insurance for the industry. The Southern Nevada HBA was a founding member of the coalition.

A Wisconsin native, Tomlinson in 1975 joined the Southern California operation of Fredericks Development Corp., a new home and multifamily home builder, as a construction superintendent and later became a company vice president. He came to Las Vegas in January 1989.

He was named “2001 Builder Member of the Year” by the Las Vegas home builders.

Tomlinson is survived by a daughter, Lisa Loftis, of Texas; a son, Alex, who lives in Southern California; and two grandchildren.
