New Postal Service Rule Headed for Mailboxes
NAHB is working with the U.S. Postal Service to ensure that new requirements for the dimensions and location of mailboxes in new and existing multifamily properties aren’t too burdensome for builders.
The new requirements could add as much as 10 inches to the required depth of mail boxes and could have a significant impact on design and construction costs, especially in smaller properties and when retrofitting existing buildings.
NAHB is a on a committee that is helping to develop a draft of the requirements and is seeking input from its members. The Postal Service would like to complete this draft and initiate the rule making process as early as September.
At its initial meeting on Feb. 4, NAHB cautioned the committee to adequately consider need, cost and practicality when developing the new construction standard. The Postal Service said that the new requirement is needed to address issues of security, mail carrier ergonomics and customer satisfaction that are not being adequately addressed under existing requirements.
