To acknowledge the increasing demand for aging-in-place and universal design in remodeling and home building, and to help mark the 10th anniversary of the Certified Aging-In-Place (CAPS) program, NAHB Remodelers is conducting an Aging-In-Place Product Tour at the 2012 NAHB International Builders’ Show in Orlando next month.
Guided tours of aging-in-place products on the show floor of the Orange County Convention Center will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. during CAPS Day at IBS on Thursday, Feb. 9.
The tours will begin at Remodelers Central, room W310 of the convention center, and highlight the safety, accessibility and lower maintenance products offered for aging-in-place consumers.
Some of the products on the tour include:
Low maintenance
Manufacturers are creating products for the aging-in-place market that are easy to maintain for home owners.
-
Sherwin-Williams will be showcasing two new paint products designed for durability and ease of maintenance. Both are low-odor paints and mildew resistant.
-
A.O. Smith will be showcasing tankless, highLY energy-efficient hot water heaters featuring extra corrosion protection and built-in freeze protection to lower repair frequency and costs. They also feature remote temperature controllers that enable home owners to select a temperature to prevent scalding.
Accessibility
With second-floor access an issue facing many households with family members who are ill, injured or otherwise disabled, residential elevators and stair lifts have become popular modifications.
-
Pneumatic Vacuum Elevators will showcase its newly introduced panoramic, air-driven residential elevators, which do not require a shaft, pit or machine room.
The home elevators range in size, accommodating from one to three passengers with wheelchair access, and can include up to four stops along a 35-foot vertical rise. They typically can be installed in one to two days.
Safety and Convenience
The engineering within NuHeat's slab de-icing and snow melting products
-
NuHeat’s slab de-icing and snow melting products can reduce a home owner’s risk and responsibility of shoveling snow from icy sidewalks and driveways.
-
Marvin’s Retractable Screen enables home owners to open and close window screens on taller windows, without standing on a stool and risking a fall.
The Retractable Screen is virtually undetectable in its closed position so home owners no longer have to remove screens or store them off season.
Continuing Ed Credits Earned
Tour participants can receive 1.5 continuing education credits towards their NAHB designation. They can register for the tour at Remodelers Central beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 8
