The best and brightest aspiring builders will be competing in the NAHB Student Chapters’ Residential Construction Management Competition during the 2012 NAHB International Builders’ Show in Orlando.
The three-day competition begins on Feb. 8 at the Orange County Convention Center.
Sixty teams from four-year, two-year and secondary school residential construction management programs will present their solutions to a specific construction problem to a panel of home building executives and a live audience, which includes hundreds of their classmates.
The teams currently are working on their written proposals and will submit them for judging before they leave for Orlando.
Secondary school and two-year program students must develop working drawings, a list of materials, a schedule and an estimate for building a new home in North Canton, Ohio, that will attain a Silver certification under the National Green Building Standard.
The four-year school category problem involves planning several lots for a property in Huntsville, Ala. — including selecting floor plans and creating an estimate, schedule, development plan, green building components, marketing plan and risk analysis.
Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, in the Valencia Ballroom at the convention center.
Forty four-year schools, 12 two-year programs and eight secondary schools have signed up to participate this year.
The participant list from four-year programs includes last year’s winner, California Polytechnic State University — San Luis Obispo, and previous winners Brigham Young University, Middle Tennessee State University, Purdue University and Michigan State University.
New to the competition this year are Florida International University in the four-year programs, Missouri’s Linn State Technical College in the two-year programs and Massachusetts’ Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School in the secondary programs.
