Therma-Tru products have been specified for an infill housing program replacing dozens of abandoned homes in historically and architecturally sensitive neighborhoods in Toledo, Ohio.

The city is working with Thomas Porter Architects to design and build energy-efficient, low-maintenance, durable and affordable homes to revitalize 17 city neighborhoods built from the 1900s to 1930s.

A cottage bungalow-style prototype was created to launch the program — one of five bungalow models that will be used.

“Specifying performance-based products that were still architecturally relevant to the design was our primary consideration for this project,” said Stuart Cline of the Toledo-based architectural firm.

“Every manufacturer had to prove to us, through independent and verified testing, that their products offered the ultimate in high-performance qualities,” he said.

“Based on years of prior experience in specifying Therma-Tru products, we knew the Classic-Craft American Style Collection entrance system would be an ideal fit for this project,” Cline said.

He noted that the door will maintain its appearance and energy-efficient attributes for years.

“The variations in this high-quality, architecturally correct Therma-Tru entryway solution make it a perfect fit for all of the bungalow designs we created,” he added, “while giving us the curb appeal we desired for this ongoing infill housing project.”

The door system meets Energy Star qualifications, and it features an extended lock block, clear insulated glass on the top of the door and a four-block dentil shelf — or transom.

Cline said the prototype home sold quickly once it was on the market and the city has requested the construction of two more bungalow-style homes next year. Eventually, 36 homes will be built for the project.

“We intend to specify additional Therma-Tru doors for those projects, adding other Therma-Tru entryway component features like multi-point locking systems, for added security of the residents,” he said.

Cline said the architects have received “outstanding” support from Therma-Tru — including easy ordering through a local dealer, helpful video and hands-on installation training, and warranties.

“They’ve worked with us to have a high-performance door in this home that has a design style that members of the community love,” he said.

Headquartered in Maumee, Ohio, Therma-Tru is a member of NAHB’s Leading Suppliers Council.
