With the Oct. 1 deadline rapidly approaching for the conforming loan limits for Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) to be lowered, NAHB is calling on Congress to move swiftly to extend the current loan limits to prevent further damage to the already fragile housing market and lackluster economy.
“Congress must act now to prevent the loan limits from reverting to lower levels,” said NAHB Chairman Bob Nielsen.
“A drop in mortgage loan limits would reduce housing demand and place downward pressure on home prices in major markets,” he said. “This would exacerbate the current housing downturn, trigger more foreclosures, impede job growth and endanger the fragile economic recovery.” ... Read More

Built on the blighted former site of a 1950s-era dilapidated mobile home park, Vista Dunes in the desert resort community of La Quinta, Calif., is now a model for the city's redevelopment efforts to design and build infill communities for workforce housing.
Along with the City of La Quinta, the project team of developer National Community Renaissance, architects Studio E Architects and Steve Gaffney Architecture, development consultant RSG, contractor DavisReed Construction, Inc. and landscape designer RGA Landscape Architects, Inc. created a sustainable 80-unit community that blends in architecturally with its surrounding landscape, incorporates passive strategies to reduce cooling loads, uses photovoltaic panels to harness the intense sun for energy and fulfills the city’s vision of transitioning away from greenfields development toward the redevelopment of existing sites.
In addition, the project team educated the Vista Dunes residents about the community’s many green features and provides on-going support so the residents can use the features effectively and take full advantage of their benefits. ...... Read More
A new index compiled by economists at NAHB has identified local housing markets that have been gaining ground lately, a sharp contrast to conditions one year ago.
Making its debut on Sept. 7, the monthly NAHB/First American Improving Markets Index (IMI) reveals metropolitan areas that have shown improvement for at least six months in housing permits, employment and home prices. ...... Read More
The White House last week released legislative language for the “American Jobs Act,” a $447 billion jobs bill outlined by President Obama in a nationally televised address to the nation on Sept. 8.
As the President took to the road to stump for his plan in such key battleground states as Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina, response to the legislation on Capitol Hill was mixed.
While Democrats have largely rallied around the President, Republicans have expressed opposition to the White House’s proposed “pay-for’s,” but have generally remained silent on the specifics of the overall plan.
NAHB also shares the concern that paying for the jobs bill mainly through tax increases will have a negative impact on job creation and the housing industry, which is counterproductive to the bill’s aims. IBS, the largest annual light construction tradeshow in the world, will be held in Orlando on Feb. 8-11.
