The unsettling economic news of recent weeks is unlikely to result in a double-dip recession, but it portends an anemic recovery taking some of the wind out of already feeble growth in housing activity and creating more uncertainty over all-important prospects for jobs and the restoration of consumer confidence, according to participants in an NAHB webinar on Aug. 16 (members-only link).
Political skirmishing over deficit reduction, which is likely to be intense this fall and winter and continue up through next year’s elections, will only add to concerns over the state of a fragile U.S. economy, they said.
A convergence of worrisome developments has set back the outlook for housing and the economy, noted NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe, starting with significantly weaker than expected growth in the gross domestic product during the first half of this year.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis on July 29 lowered its earlier estimate of 1.8% growth in the first quarter to a “very poor” 0.4%, Crowe said, and announced an initial estimate of 1.3% growth in the second quarter, which is also likely to be reduced in later estimates. ... Read More

The soon-to-be empty nesters wanted a home overlooking Missouri’s Lake Winnebago that would complement their lakeside lifestyle with the ability to host small family get-togethers as well as large social gatherings.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced on Aug. 17 that it has decided to reconsider imposing a nationwide cap on the amount of sediment allowed in stormwater draining from a construction site.
The announcement came a year after the EPA's first proposal to develop a numeric limit for the turbidity, or cloudiness, of stormwater was rejected by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, which essentially told the agency to come up with an Effluent Limitation Guidelines (ELGs) number that was legally defensible.
NAHB has estimated that attempting to comply with the regulations would carry a $10 billion annual price tag — stunting new home production and forcing costs up for home buyers. ...... Read More
Association members attending the upcoming fall board meeting in Milwaukee will have an opportunity to discuss their concerns over the code development process — including changes that mandate fire sprinklers in one- and two-family homes and increase the energy efficiency requirements for all housing — with the International Code Council (ICC) leadership and NAHB’s Construction, Codes & Standards (CC&S) Committee.

At the “Building Codes — Future Strategies” forum, the committee will discuss its draft recommendations on the future strategies NAHB should be pursuing, and it will be soliciting input from members.
Also participating in the forum, ICC President James L. Brothers will discuss how the ICC board is responding to concerns raised by NAHB and other industry representatives. All NAHB members are encouraged to attend.
