Anticipating growing home owner demand for energy efficiency technologies such as solar panel installations and retrofits, Home Builders Institute (HBI), the workforce development arm of NAHB, on July 1 expanded its Job Corps curriculum to include solar and weatherization instruction approved by the Department of Labor.
HBI has also updated its Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training (PACT) curriculum to better reflect energy efficiency standards for the residential construction workforce.
The PACT curriculum is used in all of HBI’s Workforce Training and Employment programs, including those for court-involved youths, ex-offenders and the unemployed.
To prepare students for emerging employment opportunities, HBI also has been working with the publisher of its Residential Construction Academy (RCA) series of textbooks and learning materials to include key energy efficiency building competencies in all of its 2011-2013 editions.
In May 2010, HBI launched a green compendia for each RCA text — on carpentry, house wiring, HVAC, plumbing and masonry.
All materials are developed to work with the ICC 700 National Green Building Standard, the ANSI-approved benchmark for green single-family and multifamily homes, site development and residential remodeling projects.
The RCA Series is used in high schools, two-year colleges and technical schools nationwide that offer craft trades training.
