Remodelers are encouraged to submit entries for the 2012 EnergyValue Housing Awards (EVHA) honoring builders and remodelers who voluntarily integrate energy efficiency in the design, construction and marketing of new and existing homes.

Sponsored by the NAHB Research Center, applications are due on Friday, July 29.

This is only the second year in which the 16-year EVHA competition has been open to remodelers. Categories for builders include single-family and multifamily projects.

Clifton View Homes, of Coupeville, Wash., earned Remodeler of the Year honors last year. Through the remodel, the company was able to reduce the home’s utility bills by two-thirds, even though the home’s square footage  increased by 10%.

Clifton View Homes also received gold awards in the Cold Climate, Existing Home and Moderate Climate, Custom Home categories.

To win the remodelers award, Clifton View Homes demonstrated its ability to translate the sound building science techniques and quality control mechanisms that it applies in new home construction to remodeled home design and construction.

Clifton View Homes employed energy modeling during the decision-making process to develop its energy-efficient design and create a "terrific bang for the buck." To ensure quality control throughout the construction process, the company conducted regular site meetings and created checklists and special training.

“The EnergyValue Housing Award provides a great opportunity to show off energy-efficient home remodels and the benefits to home owners,” said Paul Sullivan, CAPS, CGR, president of the Sullivan Company in Newton, Mass. “Remodelers can make a great difference in energy savings by renovating older homes.”

To Apply

Applications for New Homes and Existing Homes divisions are available at www.nahbrc.com/evha and must be submitted by July 29.

Homes completed between Jan. 31, 2009 and the EVHA application deadline are eligible.

Applicants can download the entire application in an electronic directory that contains the application itself, a subfolder for each section of the application and checklists. All required materials are clearly identified and suggestions are available for optional materials.

Once all sections are completed and saved in the appropriate subfolder, the entire directory must be submitted on two thumb drives or disks along with a signed copy of the disclosure statement. Using electronic storage devices eliminates the need for applicants to ship large binders of materials to the NAHB Research Center.

Winners will be honored at an awards dinner planned for Wednesday, Feb. 8, on the first day of the 2012 NAHB International Builders’ Show in Orlando. All award applicants are eligible for tickets to the awards dinner at ICEBAR Orlando near the convention center.

For more information on the EVHA program, email Debra Sagan at the NAHB Research Center, or call her at 800-638-8556 x6210.
