Rex Uberman, assistant secretary with the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, and building industry leaders from around the country in Orlando for the 2011 International Builders’ Show had the opportunity last month to see the strides being made by Home Builders Institute (HBI), the workforce development arm of NAHB, in providing opportunities for young people to prepare for careers in the home building industry.
In a tour of HBI’s Project CRAFT Orlando, VIPs learned more about the program — which provides training and job placement in the home building trades for adjudicated youths through a partnership with the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice — and they observed as instructors provided hands-on skills training to students using the Pre-Apprenticeship Certification Training curriculum.
“Programs do not save kids,” said Uberman. “It is the individuals within those programs who are dedicated and compassionate and absolutely adamant that every youth has a chance for success. HBI brings to Florida dedicated, professional career-minded people who are out to save youths from going to prison.”
In honor of National Mentoring Month, the tour also highlighted HBI’s industry-sponsored mentoring program, Construction Coaching Opportunities to Reach Employment (C-CORE). Funded by a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, C-CORE aims to match 5,000 youths aged 16 to 18 nationwide with more than 1,600 industry mentors recruited from home builders associations, NAHB Student Chapters, other business organizations and local communities.
The goal of the HBI C-CORE program is to help youths with promise and untapped abilities by pairing them with industry professionals who encourage them to consider careers in the home building industry and coach them for success.
“Project CRAFT and C-CORE are both excellent examples of how HBI programs have a positive effect on the community by helping educate and train youths,” said Dennis Torbett, HBI vice president for HBI Workforce Training and Employment.
