The NAHB 50+ Housing Council is offering a full day of discussions about universal design during the opening day of the 2011 International Builders’ Show in Orlando.

Universal Design Power Day: Reimagining Universal Design,” which includes four sessions examining various topics — including the latest products — begins at 9:15 a.m. EST on Wednesday, Jan. 12, in 50+ Lifestyle Central, the council’s official headquarters during IBS.

“Universal Design Power Day” will give attendees the tools and information they need to design and remodel homes and communities in order to maximize lifestyle for all residents.

The day’s free discussions include:

  • Reimagining Universal Design — Creating a High-Tech Advantage
    9:15-10:15 a.m.

This session examines the latest technology available — including controls, assistive and retrofit devices, mobility products, community services and more. By examining emerging trends, attendees can learn how to create the home of the future, one that meets the needs of all ages and abilities.

  • Meet the 50+ Housing Experts — Smart Design
    10:30-11:30 a.m.

This session dispels the notion that universal design is just for the mature market and will show attendees how to incorporate universal design for all ages that is beautiful and affordable — and not just an afterthought. Leading experts will discuss how to design and incorporate universal design “right,” as well as how to discuss universal design with prospects.

  • Reimagining Universal Design — Kitchens, Baths and More
    1:15-2:15 p.m.

Nowhere is universal design more critical than in the kitchen and bathroom. In this session, a leading universal design expert and a product manufacturer will explore all the possibilities that exist to design homes that combine flair and functionality while incorporating universal design.

Confirmed speakers include Mary Jo Peterson, CAPS, CAASH, of Mary Jo Peterson, Inc.; and Diana Schrage, of Kohler.

  • Universal Design Product Tour
    2:30-4:30 p.m.

Nationally recognized universal design experts will lead guided tours of the latest universal design products on display on showroom floor at IBS

Participants in each session will receive one hour of continuing education credit toward CAPS and other NAHB professional designations.
