Enter the 2010 BALA Design Competition

The 2009 BALA Home of the Year, the Neathermead residence in Asheville, N.C., marries sustainability with top-drawer architectural design featuring simple geometric forms and uncluttered interior spaces tempered with the use of traditional materials. Photo by David Dietrich photography.

Entries are being accepted for the 2010 Best in American Living Awards (BALA), the foremost residential design competition in the country. Now in its 27th year and sponsored by the NAHB Design Committee and Professional Builder magazine, the BALA competition puts a spotlight on the most creative and innovative builders, designers, developers, land planners and interior designers in the nation.

The competition includes 37 categories — from single-family attached and detached homes in a variety of sizes to rental developments and custom homes, plus categories for interior design, communities and neighborhoods, affordable housing, smart growth and certified green homes.

A panel of design professionals will judge entries on design appearance and curb appeal, interior floor plans, how the project relates to its own local market and the construction techniques and materials used.

Homes that were completed or that had their first model opened between Jan. 1, 2009 and July 15, 2010 are eligible for this year’s competition.

Entry Deadlines:

  • Entry forms and fees due: July 1
  • Entry notebooks due: July 15

Winners will be announced at the 2011 International Builders’ Show in Orlando, which will be held Jan. 12-15.

Winning entries also will be posted on the Professional Builder Web site for up to one year after the announcement.
