Green Home Features Should Appeal to What Women Want

Green and Affordable Winning Combination in Mississippi

Three home builders are sharing $100,000 in prize money awarded in January for the Growing a Greener Mississippi competition sponsored by the Mississippi Home Corporation (MHC).

In first place, Gulf Coast Builders, LLC received $50,000 for a green home built in Gulfport, while Habitat for Humanity Bay-Waveland was awarded $30,000 and second place for its Bay St. Louis entry and Village Green Builders Inc. took $20,000 and third place for a home built in Oxford.

All entries were required to meet at least the bronze level of the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines, a rating system that measures energy efficiency, water efficiency and other green attributes in single-family homes.

In addition, all the homes had to be affordable; none of those entered in the competition was priced at more than $175,000. On the market for $142,500, the first-place entry includes cellulose insulation, advanced framing techniques and sensor-controlled bathroom lighting and ventilation, according to MHC.

“We’re proud to recognize these innovative green homes through the Growing a Greener Mississippi competition,” said MHC Executive Director Dianne Bolen.

“Each of these seven homes demonstrates that green building and affordable housing mix,” she said. “MHC will take what we’ve learned through this initiative, incorporate it into our programs and encourage more builders to make use of green building methods.”

NAHB Green Building Subcommittee Chairman Eric Borsting, a builder in Stockton, Calif., served as one of five judges in the contest.
