Five HBAs Honored for Their Community Service Projects

Association members volunteered to teach third graders about construction and how to have interactive fun learning as part of 'Builders In School,' one of the 2008 award-winning community service projects.

The National Housing Endowment, the philanthropic arm of NAHB, recently honored five home builders associations for initiating a variety of projects last year that provided support and assistance to their communities.

The HBAs were honored with the 2008 Association Excellence Awards for the Best Community Service Project for projects that included building a new home for a family whose home was destroyed by a flood; building an emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence; building wheelchair ramps for low-income home owners with disabilities; working with young adults in Community Youth Build; and providing interactive learning to low-income third grade students.

The service awards are a formal recognition of the community service performed by building industry professionals in their communities across the country and part of Home Builders Care, initiated by Robert Mitchell, 2000 NAHB president.

"I recognized some time ago that our builders and associates have close personal relationships with the leaders in their communities and are often called upon to address the needs and problems of their neighbors,” said Mitchell. “Our continuing Home Builders Care initiative recognizes these efforts and, hopefully, shines a light on the contributions our members are making every day in the neighborhoods in which they live and work. Congratulations and appreciation to all of this year's entrants and award winners."

In addition to the award, each of the associations honored received a $1,000 donation to be directed to the charity of their choice in recognition of their service.

The 2008 awardees include:

  • Southern Tier Home Builders and Remodelers Association
    Endwell, N.Y.

Members joined forces with young adults, ages 14 to 21, who built a gazebo, utility shed, benches and other projects for such charitable organizations as the Children in Haiti Project, the local zoo and Arrowhead Bible Camp. Working alongside the members, the young adults learned about residential construction and the spirit of giving.

  • Master Builders Association of Pierce County
    Tacoma, Wash.

Members participating in the association’s “Builders In Schools Education Program” program created fun, interactive learning sessions for 65 low-income third grade students at Birney Elementary School. The members worked with the students and taught them about home building during during 10 weekly sessions.

  • Greater Cedar Rapids Area Home Builders Association
    Hiawatha, Iowa

Members helped build a new home for Randy and Donna Hanson, foster parents to nearly 30 children over a six-year period, whose home was destroyed by a devastating flood last year.

  • North State Building Industry Association
    Roseville, Calif.

Working with HomeAid Sacramento, the builder members and their trade partners donated more than $2 million of in-kind construction services and materials to build Placer County’s Peace for Families, a 39-bed energy emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children.

  • Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties
    Bellevue, Wash.

More than 450 members volunteered for their Rampathon community service project to build and donate 30 wheelchair ramps for low income home owners. Association member have built and donated 242 ramps since they began the annual one-day project in 1993.
