Builders’ Tip: How to Improve Your Hole Saw's Performance

Click for larger image | Hole saws are great for drilling large, fairly clean holes in wood, but they can be frustratingly slow.
The following trick speeds up the process and reduces a hole saw’s tendency to bind:
- Simply drill a small evacuation hole just inside of the circumference of the larger hole you intend to drill, as shown in the accompanying illustration. That way, the evacuation hole funnels the sawdust away from the hole saw’s teeth so the sawdust doesn’t accumulate at the bottom of the cut and clog up the teeth.
- For horizontal cuts, drill the evacuation hole at the top side so that the dust falls out of the cut and into the pocket.
Pre-drilling an evacuation hole eliminates the need to repeatedly pull the saw out of the hole to remove burned-on chips from the teeth
It also reduces saw binding and makes the round waste plug much easier to get out of the saw after the cut.
