Students and faculty from Purdue University receive the HELP award during ceremonies at the International Builders' Show in Las Vegas. |
The National Housing Endowment, the philanthropic arm of NAHB, recently awarded $283,000 in HELP ― Homebuilding Education Leadership Program — grants to five universities to help them create, expand and enhance existing residential construction management programs.
The grants were announced at the NAHB Student Chapter Award Ceremony at the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas earlier this year.
“Through the HELP grants, the National Housing Endowment works to help the residential construction industry develop more advanced and effective approaches to home building as well as to ensure that the industry has an ample, well-trained supply of future workers and leaders,” said Gary Garczynski, endowment chairman and 2002 NAHB president.
The 2009 grants were awarded to:
- Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colo., which will use the funding to hire new faculty with expertise in residential construction and develop additional content to supplement the curriculum.
- North Dakota State University, Fargo, N.D., which will use the funding to develop a cognitive apprenticeship program and mentoring network to supplement classroom instruction with hands-on construction management experiences.
- Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., which will use the funding to incorporate classes and certifications from The NAHB University of Housing into its construction management program.
- Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, and Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, Texas, which will partner together and use the funding to enhance minority groups’ interest in the residential construction programs and strengthen the programs at both universities.
Established in 2006, the endowment created the HELP initiative to bolster or start residential construction programs in leading two- and four-year colleges and universities around the country and to triple the number of graduates entering the home building industry. To date, the endowment has awarded more than $1 million in HELP grants to educational institutions.
Previous recipients include California Polytechnic University – San Luis Obispo, East Carolina University, the Georgia Institute of Technology, Jefferson State Community College, John A. Logan College, Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
