NY City Housing Commissioner Donovan Tapped to Head HUD
President-elect Barack Obama on Dec. 13 announced that he selected New York City Housing Commissioner Shaun Donovan to be his nominee as secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Donovan served at HUD during the Clinton Administration and much of his career has focused on financing, producing and preserving multifamily housing.
“We are pleased that HUD secretary nominee Donovan will bring strong housing experience and expertise to the job. We look forward to working with him on a broad range of issues — from getting the housing market back on its feet, to affordable housing initiatives and the expanded role of the FHA,” said NAHB Chairman Sandy Dunn.
Donovan was appointed commissioner of New York City’s Housing Preservation and Development Department in 2004 by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Prior to serving as New York’s housing commissioner, Donovan was a managing director at Prudential Mortgage Capital Company, where he oversaw FHA multifamily lending and affordable housing investments.
Before joining Prudential, he was a visiting scholar at New York University, where he researched and wrote about the preservation of federally assisted housing. He was also a consultant to the Millennial Housing Commission on multifamily housing issues and a member of the National Housing Conference.
Donovan worked at the Federal Housing Administration during the Clinton Administration and was elevated to deputy assistant secretary for multifamily housing near the end of the Administration’s second term. He briefly served as acting FHA commissioner in the Administration’s final days.
