Click for larger image. | The accompanying drawing shows how I align shingle courses align on a simple roof ― one with no hips or valleys ― without snapping chalklines.
Using my simple stringline rig, I scribe layout marks on the drip edge and use them to guide a stringline.
- I made the stringline with clips made of scrap aluminum at each end.
- On one end, I connect the clip to the string using a loop of four or five heavy rubber bands. The rubber bands supply enough tension to keep the string taut over the length of the roof.
- When I set the bottom edge of the clip on the layout mark, the string is 1/4 inch above the course I am putting down.
- When I finish a course, I simply slide the clip on that end up to the next mark, go back to the outer end of the roof, slide the other clip up and carry on.
