Student Members Get Set for Builders’ Show in Las Vegas

Despite a slow housing market, members of NAHB Student Chapters are expected to turn out in large numbers when the International Builders’ Show (IBS) moves to Las Vegas in January.

Nearly 1,500 students registered for the 2008 IBS in Orlando, and a majority of them were on hand to participate in or support their school at the annual Residential Construction Management Competitions (RCMC).

Fifty-four teams from universities, community colleges, high schools and vocational schools competed in 2008. The winners included Arizona State University, the Pennsylvania College of Technology and Juneau Douglass High School.

Students are gearing up now for the 2009 competition, which will take place at Caesars Palace from Jan. 19-21, and preparing presentations demonstrating their proficiency in completing the management aspects of a real-life housing development.

Two-year colleges and secondary divisions began the 2009 RCMC earlier this month and four-year colleges will tackle the challenge starting on Oct. 17.

Participating teams are required to complete a simulated construction project based on an actual housing development under construction in San Antonio by Centex Homes, the RCMC sponsor.

Many students will be able to attend the upcoming IBS thanks to financial assistance for their travel expenses from the National Housing Endowment. Students and chapters can apply directly for the funds, or home builders associations can apply for matching funds on their behalf.

The application deadline for the 2009 IBS Scholarship is Oct. 31. Student chapters will announce the award recipients in late November.

In another IBS highlight, at an awards ceremony on Wednesday night, Jan. 21, outstanding NAHB student chapters and educators will be recognized for their year-long contributions to the program and their dedication to promoting residential construction.

NAHB Student Chapters will also be hosting the Third Diversity and Inclusion in Construction luncheon on Jan. 19 and the Building Careers Job Fair on Jan. 21.
