24 Centex ‘Build Your Future’ Scholars Announced
The National Housing Endowment, the philanthropic arm of NAHB, recently announced the 24 winners of the 2008-2009 academic year Centex “Build Your Future” Scholarship fund.
The fund provides tuition assistance to undergraduate and graduate students nationwide who are pursuing careers in the building industry. Centex Corporation created the scholarship to help address the pressing need for educating and training managers.
This year, 24 recipients were awarded a total $51,000 in scholarships:
- Ashley Bastian, a junior majoring in technology management with an emphasis in construction management at Utah Valley University, was awarded $3,000.
- Joseph Bindas, a junior majoring in construction systems management at Ohio State Unviersity, was awarded $1,500.
- Catherine Carleo, a junior studying architecture with a construction mangement minor at the University of New Mexico, received $3,000.
- James Conlin, a junior majoring in construction management at Northern Michigan University, was awarded $1,500.
- Jeremy Daniel, a senior majoring in construction management at Georgia Southern University, received $3,000.
- Victor Doroghian, a senior studying construction management at Bringham Young University, received $3,000.
- Phyllis Ferguson, a senior majoring in construction engineering at San Diego State University, was awarded $1,500.
- Lee Fisher, a senior majoring in architecture at the University of Colorado-Denver, received $1,500.
- Mary Gilliam, a senior studying architecture at Bakersfield College, received $1,500.
- Keland Holmes, a sophomore majoring in construction management at the University of Texas at Tyler, received $1,500.
- Kashmira Kayser, in her second year of graduate studies in construction mangement at Texas A&M University, was awarded $3,000.
- Hannah Merkley, a junior majoring in pre-construction management at Bringham Young University, received $3,000.
- William Millard, a junior majoring in construction management at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, was awarded $1,500.
- Georgette Msambo-Moyer, a junior studying architecture at the University of Virginia, received $1,500.
- Steven Rice, a junior majoring in construction management at Boise State University, was awarded $1,500.
- Rodolfo Rodriguez, a freshman majoring in architecture at the University of Texas at Austin, received $1,500.
- Zachary Rossman, a sophomore studying construction management at the University of Cincinnati, received $1,500.
- Addison Shockley, a sophomore majoring in construction management at the University of Central Missouri, received $1,500.
- Corwyn Smith, a freshman majoring in building construction technology at the Pennsylvania College of Technology, was awarded $3,000.
- James Theisen, a junior studying construction management at Minnesota State University, received $3,000.
- Sarah Thornsberry, a junior majoring in construction management at Washington State University, was awarded $3,000.
- Martha Villanueva, a freshman majoring in construction management at the University of Houston, received $3,000.
- Stephen Winterroth, a freshman studying construction technology at Cuesta College, received $1,500.
- Paul Yatch, a junior majoring in construction management at Central Michigan University, was awarded $1,500.
“Centex is proud of its efforts to remain at the forefront of builders providing educational opportunities to students pursing careers in the home building industry,” said Chris Gocke, national college recruitment manager for Centex Homes. “We take seriously our obligation to give back to the industry and are proud to work with the National Housing Endowment on this effort.”
Since the scholarship was founded in 1999, Centex has awarded more than $200,000 to 115 exemplary students attending residential construction programs across the country.

The endowment administers 12 scholarships and awards more than $350,000 each year to students pursuing careers in residential construction and related fields.
