New NAHB Tool Provides Storm Water Compliance Tips

Builders and developers who want to avoid expensive fines for poor storm water management from the federal Environmental Protection Agency and state and local environmental agencies have a new tool to help them.

The NAHB Environmental Issues Committee has created a set of 11 storm water compliance cards for members to download and print. The cards outline the top compliance issues on one side and how to fix them on the other. Builders and developers can laminate the cards for easy reference in the field.

The cards tell builders and developers how to:

  • Determine whether they need a permit
  • Submit and post a Notice of Intent (NOI)
  • Prepare and implement a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP)
  • Install and maintain erosion and sediment control measures
  • Practice good housekeeping and control all sources of pollutants
  • Identify responsible parties, delegate and manage subcontractor obligations and create a checklist of procedures to follow
  • Conduct and document inspections and correct any problems that are found
  • Keep SWPPPs updated
  • Minimize tracking of dirt into the streets and provide inlet protection
  • Know what to do when an inspector shows up
  • Stabilize disturbed areas and submit a Notice of Termination (NOT)

For additional information on the cards, e-mail Lindsay Cather at NAHB at 800-368-5242 x8163.
