Rep. Capito Praises Sandy Dunn as Housing Leader

NAHB President-elect Sandy Dunn, a native of Mason County, W.Va., recently received some words of praise on Capitol Hill from Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.).

Capito on Jan. 22 told the U.S. House of Representatives that Dunn will become the first West Virginian and the second female to serve as the association’s president.

“It is an honor to represent such an accomplished female leader who serves the needs of the home building industry on the national front, while always maintaining her dedication to her community of Mason County,” Capito said. “I am proud to call Sandy Dunn a friend and a fellow West Virginian.”

Dunn followed in her father’s footsteps by pursuing an interest in public service and taking over the family business, B.J. Builders, which was founded in 1974, Capito said. In 1974, Dunn also opened her own small business, Homestead Realty, which grew into the county’s largest realty agency.

“While remaining dedicated to her community, Sandy emerged in the home building industry as an effective leader, with a reputation as a consensus builder,” said Capito. “She owes her success to open communication and listening to the concerns of the industry within her state and across the nation.”

Dunn has been active with NAHB for 30 years, starting with leadership positions at the local level and later serving as the president of the Home Builders Association of West Virginia for two years.

Capito cited Dunn’s numerous honors, including the 1997 Henry E. King Award, the highest accolade in her state. She was named NAHB’s National Representative of the Year in 1998.
