Eaton Integrates Intercom With Structured Wiring System

Attendees at the International Builders’ Show in Orlando on Feb. 13-16 will find the latest in residential electrical distribution products at the Eaton Electrical: Cutler-Hammer Booth W3889.

Among products that can give builders an edge among prospective home buyers in today’s competitive market:

  • CAT5 Intercom system. The new intercom is designed to integrate with Eaton’s structured wiring system, with the control hub located in the structured wiring panel. Giving old intercom technology a facelift, only one CAT5 cable is needed for each master keypad, mini master keypad and door station, eliminating the need for special brackets.

Eaton’s new intercom uses standard electrical rough-in boxes, making the prewire less expensive than with traditional intercoms. The system also has incorporated a special A-BUS port allowing the intercom to interrupt Eaton’s A-BUS audio system if the intercom is activated. The product also comes standard with features such as room monitoring, room muting, seven doorbell chimes and a high-quality microphone at each station for clear communication.

  • Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter. Eaton has developed a unique arc fault circuit interrupter that plugs directly on to the neutral bar instead of at the bottom of the loadcenter. When used in conjunction with an Eaton Plug-On Neutral Loadcenter, a contractor can save as much as one minute per breaker in installation time. With the Plug-On Neutral Loadcenter, all circuits are easier to wire in the pigtail free gutter space.

Other features include a lifetime transferable warranty, and a 35 KAIC standard main breaker. Additionally, branch breakers trip off for easy home owner recognition.

Eaton’s Plug-On Neutral Loadcenter can also save time installing AFCI combination type breakers now required in the latest edition of the NEC (National Electric Code) in place of current branch type AFCI.

  • Fireguard Combination Type Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters. The new combination type AFCI combines the parallel arc detection (line-ground and line-neutral) of the existing branch type AFCI with low level series arc detection in connected cords. This new product will increase the level of electrical protection in new homes through new technology in which Eaton is the industry leader.

The product is available in 15 and 20 amp single pole styles, in both the 1” and ¾” design Cutler-Hammer products. The breakers have the same form and fit as the current offering and will fit in all of the current residential distribution panels.

Effective as of Jan. 1, the 2005 National Electric Code began requiring Combination AFCIs in place of the current branch type AFCI on bedroom circuits, and they are also required in other parts of the home, such as family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms and hallways.

The Cutler-Hammer Fireguard combination type AFCI is UL1699-certified, contains advanced self-diagnostics via a test button and has very low power consumption resulting in reduced distribution panel heating.
