New I-9 Employee Verification Form Now Required

Effective as of Nov. 26, employers are now required to use the new Form I-9 to verify the identity and employment authorization of all newly hired employees, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced.

The amended Form I-9 contains an updated list of acceptable identity and employment authorization documents that reflect the current regulations.

It is now the only valid version of that form, but the Department of Homeland Security will not seek penalties against an employer for using a previous version of the Form I-9 on or before Dec. 26, 2007. Using the old Form I-9 after that date will be punishable by fines.

Employers are not required to update the Form I-9 used for current employees hired before the effective date.
