TruStile Doors Provide Superior Sound Performance
 TruStile Door’s solid MDF and wood stile and rail doors enable builders to achieve superior levels of sound proofing.
Doors have traditionally been one of the weakest links in sound insulation, according to the manufacturer, with typical value-engineered hollow-core doors and “solid” doors with low density and straw cores offering little sound protection.
Sound results from vibrations that move in waves through the air. When these vibrations come into contact with a door, the energy from the vibrations is transferred to the door. The resulting vibrations in the door set the air in motion on the other side of the door, multiplying the sound vibrations. A door’s mass and stiffness determine its resistance to the passage of sound waves. The greater they are, the less sound comes through the door.
TruStile says that the weight, solid construction and high density of its MDF doors provide excellent sound ratings compared to cheap, hollow-core doors.
Standard TruStile MDF doors receive a 34 STC (sound transmission class) rating, which is some 10 to 15 points higher than typical hollow core doors achieving a “very poor” rating of 20 to 25.
For openings that require even better sound performance, TruStile’s 20-minute fire doors achieve a 35 STS rating and 60-minute fire doors receive a 39 rating.
“It is important to remember that sound waves follow the path of least resistance, so a door’s sound rating is only as good as the gasketing and perimeter seal that is incorporated into the opening,” TruStile says. “Even the smallest gaps can transmit as much sound as a larger gap.”
TruStile says it has tested its doors in operable openings with Zero International and Pemko sound gasketing packages. Sound testing with operable doors creates a more realistic environment, and project specifiers should be aware that other manufacturers may test their sound doors in inoperable, or unrealistic, openings.
